On September 23, 2026, Discord started placing every account into an age group. Most people won't notice anything. Some adults will find themselves locked out of age-restricted servers until they confirm their age, and teens get a more locked-down version of the app.
This is the second attempt. Discord's first plan, announced in February, relied on face scans and ID uploads and was pulled after a wave of backlash. Here's how the new system works, how to check where you landed, every way to confirm your age, and what all this means for your privacy.
What changed on September 23
Discord co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy laid out the new system in a blog post on September 22. The rollout started the next day and is reaching accounts gradually over the week.
The core change: every account is now placed in one of three age groups.
Your age group isn't shown on your profile or to other people in a server.
What the teen experience looks like
For accounts in the Teen group, Discord turns on a set of default protections:
- Message requests from people who aren't friends go to a separate inbox.
- Friend request warnings appear when someone doesn't share mutual friends or a small server with you.
- Sensitive images are blurred or blocked.
- Age-restricted servers, channels and bot commands aren't accessible.
- Full profile details are visible only to friends and people in smaller servers you share.
Teens can still message friends, join voice calls and use regular servers. Otherwise, Discord says, the app works the same.
What happens to adults
If Discord puts you in the Adult group, nothing changes. If you're an adult and end up in Teen or Unconfirmed, you'll hit a prompt the moment you try to open an age-restricted server or channel, or change certain safety settings. You can confirm your age at any time from Account Status.
How Discord guesses your age
Discord built an age estimation model that works from account behavior. Per the company, it looks at:
- The communities, servers and games you're connected to
- General activity levels, such as how many servers or channels you're active in
- Account history, such as how old the account is
Discord says the model does not read your messages, listen to calls or look at the content you post. The idea is that a typical teen's usage pattern looks different in aggregate from a typical 30-year-old's, and the model has learned those patterns. The company has published a separate technical write-up on how it works.
The practical consequence: an account you've had since 2016 and use mainly in gaming and dev servers is likely to land in Adult. A new account, or one mostly active in servers popular with younger users, is more likely to end up Teen or Unconfirmed, even if you're 35.
How to check your Discord age group
- Open Discord on desktop, web or mobile.
- Go to User Settings (the gear icon, or your profile picture on mobile).
- Open Account Status.
- Your age group appears there once the rollout reaches your account.
If nothing shows yet, check back in a few days. Discord says the rollout is running through the week of September 23.
Every way to confirm your age on Discord
If you're an adult who landed in Teen or Unconfirmed, go to User Settings > Account Status and choose a method. Depending on your region and device, you may see some or all of these:
A few details worth knowing, from Discord's vendor and data page:
- Discord says it receives only an age signal, such as your age group or estimated age, never your name, card number, ID or face scan.
- Vendors must delete what you submit immediately after confirming your age group.
- Facial age estimation has to run entirely on your device, so the video doesn't leave your phone. Discord says it won't work with any vendor that can't meet that requirement.
- Stripe keeps the last four digits of the card after a credit card check, because of its obligations as a payment processor.
- The Google Wallet option currently works with passports from the US, UK, Brazil, Singapore and Taiwan.
If privacy is your main concern, an app store age range or an AgeKey shares the least identity data. A credit card check leaves the last four digits with Stripe, and an ID scan shares the most.
Why Discord is doing this now
Discord describes the move as a way to get ahead of laws before regulators dictate the details. Several of those laws already apply:
- UK and Australia: Discord launched age assurance and teen defaults there in 2025, to meet the UK's Online Safety Act and Australian rules.
- Brazil: new rules required age assurance in 2026.
- Texas: in July 2026, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton won a county court injunction requiring Discord to give Texas users the same age-assurance and safety features it provides in the UK, as Ars Technica reported.
Discord isn't alone. In January 2026 Roblox started requiring facial age checks for everyone who wants to chat. About half of US states now require age verification for adult sites, and several regulate social media for minors. Age checks are becoming a standard part of going online.
Why the first plan failed
In February 2026, Discord announced a global teen-by-default rollout that would ask users to verify with a face scan or ID upload to reach age-restricted spaces. The backlash was immediate, and it had a specific cause.
In 2025, attackers stole government ID images belonging to about 70,000 Discord users from a third-party service Discord had used to handle age checks in the UK and Australia. People who had uploaded their IDs to get into a server found out those IDs were now in someone else's hands.
That's the core problem with ID-based age verification: every copy of your ID sitting with a vendor is a copy that can leak. Discord responded by delaying the global rollout, adding methods that don't require an ID or a face, publishing its vendor list, and requiring on-device face estimation. The vendor process behind the 2025 breach has been "fully retired," according to Discord.
Privacy groups remain skeptical of age verification in general. The EFF argues these systems "create dangerous new forms of surveillance, censorship, and exclusion." Discord's new approach is less invasive than its February plan. It still means an automated model makes judgments about who you are, based on how you use the app.
Can a VPN bypass Discord age verification?
No, and it's worth being clear about why.
Your Discord age group is tied to your account, not your IP address or location. The model looks at your account's age, servers and activity. Connecting through a VPN server in another state or country doesn't change any of that, so it won't move you from Teen or Unconfirmed into Adult.
Region does play a role in which rules and verification methods apply, since Texas, the UK, Australia and Brazil have legal requirements. But trying to misrepresent your location or age to avoid a legally required check can break Discord's terms of service and get an account restricted. If you're an adult, the fastest fix is one of the confirmation methods above.
Where a VPN actually fits
A VPN isn't an age verification workaround. It's a privacy layer for the rest of your online life, which is increasingly asking for more information about you.
Here's what's happening across the internet right now:
- More services want to know who you are. Discord, Roblox and a growing list of sites check age with faces, IDs, cards or account signals.
- States are regulating by location. Adult sites are blocked or gated in about half of US states based on where your connection appears to come from. Utah passed a law in 2026 targeting VPN use around age checks (enforcement is on hold while a court challenge and state rulemaking play out), and a federal bill introduced in September 2026 (H.R. 10364) would let courts order VPN providers to block foreign piracy sites.
- Your IP address and location are part of your profile. Every site you visit sees your IP, city and internet provider, before you share anything at all. You can see exactly what yours reveals on the Atomic VPN homepage.
A VPN can't change what you've shared with a platform when you sign in. It does control what every site and network learns about you before and around that: your real IP address, your approximate location, and, on public or shared Wi-Fi, which services you use. That's the layer incognito mode doesn't touch.

Staying safe during the rollout
Big changes like this always bring scams. A few rules:
- Only confirm your age inside Discord, from User Settings > Account Status or an in-app prompt. The official flow starts in the app, so treat any verification link sent by DM as suspicious. The one exception is a manual ID review by a k-ID representative, which Discord offers only through an official Discord DM after other methods have failed.
- Ignore "verify or your account will be banned" messages from users or bots. That's a classic phishing pattern, and the goal is usually to steal your login or your ID.
- Pick the least invasive method that works for you. If an app store age range or a card check is available, you don't need to send a face or an ID.
- Turn on two-factor authentication in User Settings > My Account. Account takeovers are far more common than age-verification problems.
